1. Explore Sultanahmet Square & Its Iconic Landmarks
If it’s your first time visiting, Sultanahmet is the best place to start. This historic area is stroller-friendly and packed with landmarks your kids will recognize from storybooks like:
- Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque – Beautiful inside and out. Remember to check prayer times before visiting, remove shoes, and bring a scarf or shawl for modest dress.
- The Blue Mosque – Free entry and an easy walk from Hagia Sophia.
- Sultanahmet Square – Perfect for strolling, grabbing Turkish ice cream, and people-watching. The playful ice-cream vendors put on a mini show every time!
👉 Tip: Stay nearby in Sultanahmet for easy access and short walks between attractions. We loved how simple it was to explore right from our hotel door at the Radisson Hotel President Old Town Istanbul.
2. Visit the Grand Bazaar & Spice Bazaar
The Grand Bazaar is a sensory adventure, with bright lanterns, handmade rugs, pottery, jewelry, and endless colors that fascinated our kids. Nearby, the Spice Bazaar fills the air with the scent of cinnamon, saffron, and tea blends.
Both are stroller-accessible and great for letting kids pick out souvenirs or taste local sweets like Turkish delight (pomegranate flavor was our kids’ favorite!).
👉 Family tip: Bring wet wipes and reusable utensils for sampling street food.
3. Enjoy a Traditional Turkish Breakfast
No trip to Istanbul is complete without a Turkish breakfast (Kahvaltı). Try a café like Sefa-i Hürrem Café & Restaurant, where you can dress in traditional Turkish gowns and take photos. It was one of my favorite experiences (the cost was around 10 Euros for over 50 photos with my own phone + costume rental!)
Breakfast includes cheeses, olives, honey, bread, and eggs — simple, fresh, and perfect for even picky eaters.
📍Sefa-i Hürrem Café & Restaurant : Demirtaş Mahallesi, Süleymaniye, Fetva Ykş. No: 6, 34134 Fatih/İstanbul, Türkiye📍
4. Feed Seagulls from a Rooftop
Head to Seven Hills Restaurant for incredible panoramic views of the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. After lunch, grab some fries and feed the seagulls — it’s such a fun photo moment for kids.

5. Explore Palaces and Parks
- Topkapi Palace (Topkapi Sarayı) – Don’t miss it! Most areas are stroller-accessible, and the rooms sparkle with treasures.
- Gülhane Park – Just outside the palace, this is a free park with slides, climbing areas, and open space for kids to run wild after sightseeing.
6. Taste the Best Street Food in Istanbul
Eating in Istanbul is an adventure by itself and safe, even for kids! We tried everything from kebabs to chestnuts, and even while six months pregnant, I never got sick.
Kid-approved favorites:
- Simit (sesame-covered bread rings)
- Börek (flaky cheese pastry)
- Baklava from Hafiz Mustafa
- Turkish ice cream (Dondurma) – interactive, funny, and delicious!
- Fresh pomegranate juice – fun to watch them squeeze it right in front of you.

7. Take a Ferry Between Europe & Asia
One of Istanbul’s coolest experiences is riding a ferry across the Bosphorus, where kids can literally say they’ve traveled from Europe to Asia in minutes! You can grab snacks, sit outside, and enjoy the views.
Here’s a highly rated cruise I recommend of the Bosphorus that’s affordable at $11 USD/pp with kids discounts offered! 👇🏼👇🏼

8. Visit Beşiktaş & the Dolmabahçe Palace
Beşiktaş is one of the best neighborhoods for families, full of waterfront parks, fewer crowds, and easy access to the Dolmabahçe Palace. Nearby, you’ll find plenty of shops, cafés, and space to stretch little legs.
9. Say Hello to Istanbul’s Street Cats & Dogs
Istanbul is famous for its friendly street animals. Many have collars, are neutered/spayed, and well-fed by the community. Our kids loved spotting cats sunbathing on rooftops or napping near shops, a simple joy that makes Istanbul feel like home.
(We didn’t pet every animal, but as a biologist and dog trainer, I can say most are very sweet and cared for!)
10. Visit a Turkish Hammam (Spa)
If you want a little cultural twist, stop by Hürrem Sultan Hammam, a 16th-century bathhouse designed for Sultan Süleyman’s wife. While the full spa experience is best for adults, older kids or teens can join a brief tour to see this beautiful historic site.
📍Cankurtaran, Ayasofya Meydanı No:2, 34122 Fatih/İstanbul, Türkiye 📍
11. Cross to the Asian Side – Explore Kadıköy
Hop on the ferry and visit Kadıköy, a charming local neighborhood known for its markets and relaxed vibe. Stop by the Kadıköy Fish Market, wander local cafés, or stay at DoubleTree by Hilton Moda with its indoor pool — perfect for families who need a little downtime.
12. End the Day with Turkish Coffee & Baklava
Our family loved wrapping up each evening with baklava and a Turkish coffee for the adults. Hafiz Mustafa became our nightly stop with rich flavors, warm service, and the perfect way to end a busy day. Hafiz Mustafa has multiple locations in Istanbul; check to see which is closest to you.
Family Travel Tips for Istanbul
- Stroller-friendly: Sidewalks are smooth and walkable, especially in Old Town.
- Locals love kids: Expect smiles, treats, and help everywhere you go.
- Noise-sensitive kids: Bring headphones for the prayer calls.
- Safety: We felt completely safe exploring, even with three young children and being a woman alone.
- Jet lag tip: A little melatonin helped us adjust quickly!
Why Istanbul Belongs on Every Family’s Bucket List
Istanbul combines history, beauty, and hospitality effortlessly. In just three days, we discovered ancient mosques, ate our weight in street food, and laughed our way through maze-like markets. Locals spoke English, Turkish, and even Spanish — always ready to make us feel welcome.
If your family loves culture, food, and adventure, Istanbul deserves a spot on your travel list.
